Ok, so today I decided I want to blog about the process of getting a business up and running, and now here I am writing my first post! I figured if I don’t start now, I’ll end up putting it off until I eventually give up.
This one is going to be short and sweet though. I suppose I should introduce myself. I’m Rachel, I live in Manchester, although I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places. I have worked in theatrical costume departments for over 10 years, and that’s where I developed my sewing skills and discovered a love of rhinestoning! I’ve wanted to start my own business, selling all things sparkly, for a while now, but I’ve always found a reason to wait. Then 2020 struck, with Covid 19 and the lockdown and suddenly I had more time on my hands than I’ve ever had. So, with no more excuses, I took the plunge. I decided on a name, got a new logo (which I love, check out Mark Eastwood) and set up an Etsy shop.
Now I’ve tried my luck on Etsy before and had zero success, but this time is different. I spend more time making my listings and pictures look good. I’ve set up Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest accounts to publicise myself. Last time I tried this I obviously didn’t have any faith in myself because I didn’t tell anyone I was doing it and that was probably my biggest mistake. I’ve now found out how supportive my friends and family are. Hearing them say they like my work and that they are impressed with what I’m doing gives me the confidence to keep going.
So where am I right now? My Etsy shop has been open for two months, I’ve had 19 sales and I get the occasional custom order through Facebook and Instagram. I’m happy with my products, I look at them and think “I’d buy that”. Now I want to grow, I want to turn those 19 sales into 190 then turn that into 1900 and just keep going. This is my plan for the immediate future: focus on getting my shop seen. I’m going to spend less time making new products, although that is my favourite part of this venture, and dedicate time to the things I find less exciting. I’m going to learn all about Etsy SEO and I’m going to apply it to my whole store. I’m going to figure out how to use eRank. I’m going to read every article and watch every video I can find. Then I’m going to write all about it and maybe it will, in turn, help someone else.
There. Now I’ve said it all, I definitely have to do it.
That’s it for now, stay tuned to see how it all goes.
